Thames records double-double in buzzer-beater loss vs. NSU

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Griffon Men's Basketball fell to the Northeastern State RiverHawks 62-61 at home Thursday night on Caison Hartloff's buzzer-beating shot at the MWSU Fieldhouse.

JaRon Thames had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Griffons (15-9, 9-9 MIAA). Zion Swader tacked on six points and three steals, and Justin Bubak chipped in as well with nine points off the bench.

Missouri Western grabbed 31 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Northeastern's 28, led by Thames' 12 boards.

Western forced 15 Northeastern (9-14, 4-13 MIAA) turnovers. The Griffons turned those takeaways into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Swader's three steals led the way for MWSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Western started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Taye Fields, to take an early lead with 18:00 left in the first half. Northeastern then responded to tie things up at 29-29 heading into halftime. Western got the job done in the paint in the first half, scoring 16 of its 29 points close to the basket.

Northeastern then snagged a 43-39 advantage before MWSU responded by going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Swader's jumper, to seize a 46-43 lead with 11:24 to go in the contest. Northeastern re-asserted control, outscoring the Griffons 19-15 the rest of the way to hand MWSU the 62-61 loss. Despite this, Western took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 32 points in the lane.

  • Thames notched an impressive double-double for the Griffons with 23 points and 12 rebounds. It's his third double-double of the season and the seventh of his career.
