ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Griffon Baseball broke through after a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning to defeat the St. Cloud State Huskies 12-11 Saturday afternoon at the Spring Sports Complex.
Robert Farrell (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Missouri Western (4-2). The left-hander went 1.1 innings, giving up four runs, zero earned, on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Caleb Peterson also made an impact on the mound for the Griffons, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing one hit, with two walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Griffons were paced by Ryan Koval, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a triple and a season-high four RBI. Kaden Doan put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Travis Wiese also chipped in for MWSU, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a triple and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 3-0, the Griffons first put runs on the board in the second inning. Jackson Bryant came across to score the lone run of the inning for MWSU and get them on the board.
The Griffons kept the Huskies off the board before tying it up in the third. Koval's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where MWSU scored twice, which evened the score at 3-3.
That 3-3 tie turned into a 7-3 Griffon lead in the fifth. The Griffs' bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run triple off the bat of Koval.
The Huskies then tied up the ballgame at seven before MWSU fought back to retake the lead in the seventh inning. The Griffons scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Noah Cook, bringing the MWSU advantage to 11-7.
St. Cloud (1-4) fired back to tie the game at 11 before the Griffons reclaimed a 12-11 advantage in the eighth inning. Western scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bryant. The score remained 12-11 for the rest of the game, as the Griffons held on for the win.
