ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Five pitchers combined to throw a shutout on Sunday as Griffon Baseball blanked the St. Cloud State Huskies 3- at the Spring Sports Complex.
Christian Whiting started on the mound for Missouri Western (5-2), going three shutout innings while giving up four hits, walking none, and striking out three. Jake Beckmann was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going 2.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out two.
Ryan Neise led the way offensively for the Griffons, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a double. Quinton Robertson put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with his own double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring for the first time in the inning. Cameron Dean came across to score the lone run of the inning for the Griffs and get them on the board.
Western then tacked on runs in the seventh inning, scoring twice on a wild pitch and then a passed ball.
GAME NOTES
- This is Western's first series sweep since 2020.
- Every MWSU starter reached base safely in the win.
- Pitcher Jeremy Husband earned the win with 1.2 innings work, striking out two batters in the process.
- Pitcher David Steffen earned his first save of the season and also struck out two Huskies.
- Western's highest-scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed two runs across.
- Griffon pitchers limited St. Cloud State to just 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
- Western pitchers faced 40 St. Cloud hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out 10.
- The Griffons drew four walks from St. Cloud pitching.
- Neise led the Griffons at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a double.
- St. Cloud was led offensively by senior Cal James, who went 2-for-4.
- Payton VanBeck led the Huskies pitching staff, throwing six innings of one-run ball.
UP NEXT
The Griffons hit the road next weekend for a four-game series with Drury starting on Friday at 3 p.m. in Springfield, Missouri. This will be Drury's 2024 season opener.
