ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western men's basketball (9-2, 2-0 MIAA) put on a show for a boisterous crowd of 2,548 on Wednesday at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
More than 2,000 middle and elementary school students from 17 area schools packed the stands, as the Griffons defeated Kansas Christian College 114-60.
The 114 points are the most put up by a Griffon men's basketball team since a 124-point showing against Saint Mary in November 2001. The win also marks the most points ever scored in a game in the
Will Martin era, and the widest margin of victory in the Martin era as well.
Trailing 12-7 early, Missouri Western figured things out quickly and dominated down the stretch, taking a 50-30 advantage into the halftime locker room.
The Griffons did not let up, adding 64 points to their total in the second half and playing 12 people in all. All 12 who got in the game scored - seven of them finished in double figures.
Julius Dixon led the way with 16 points omn a 3-of-4 effort from three. He also had five rebounds.
Zane Nelson added 15 points and six assists.
Josh Book came off the bench for a season-best 14 points - all in the second half. Book was also a career-best 4-of-4 from downtown.
Ethan Kilgore added 11 points, while
Matthew Schneider scored a career-high 10 and
Kiani Saxon had 10 points to go with his seven rebounds.
Missouri Western shot the ball well all day, connecting on 58.4% (45-of-77) from the field, including a stellar 14-of-25 (56%) from three. The Griffs also made 10-of-13 (76.9%) at the free throw line.
Missouri Western dominated in several categories, including points in the paint (60-24), second chance points (31-4), bench points (59-9), offensive rebounds (18-6) and total rebounds (49-21).
The Griffons stay home Saturday to face Truman State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and the MIAA Network.
