Griffons power past Blue Tigers to stay in MIAA Tournament hunt

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Griffon softball powered past Lincoln on Friday, claiming a sweet thanks to an excellent all around performance, winning game one 13-0 and game two 3-2 at the Spring Sports Complex.

GAME ONE
Missouri Western 13, Lincoln 0 (five innings)
The game started off slow, with neither team getting on the board in the first inning. The Griffons only needed four more trips to the dish to take care of the game, putting up six runs in the second inning, three in the third and four in the fourth. This was highlighted by four Griffon home runs, including Makenzie DeVine and Chloe Armstrong slamming back-to-back bombs in the second.

Lincoln (7-39, 2-22 MIAA) was shut down all day, as Harley Pruetting pitched a shutout, only allowing two hits. The Griffons won 13-0 in five innings.

GAME TWO
Missouri Western 3, Lincoln 2
The Griffons once again got most of their work done in the middle innings, scoring in the third, fourth and fifth inning. The Griffons tallied seven hits to Lincoln's two, but the Blue Tigers were able to stay in the game due to three errors by the Griffs. Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Natalee Weber singled home Kyle DeHook to put MWSU up for good.

Sydni Hawkins and Kennedy Preston led the Griffons with two hits, and pitcher Sam Pederson gave up just one earned run in the 3-2 win.

NOTABLES
  • Hawkins picked up a triple in both games.
  • Four home runs in game one ties a single-game season-high for the Griffons this season.
  • Thirteen RBI, 15 hits and 13 runs are also season-highs for MWSU.
  • Hawkins and Abby Dickey both drove in four runs in game one, a season-high for Hawkins and a career-high for Dickey.
UP NEXT
The Griffons host Central Missouri (32-17, 16-8 MAA) in a doubleheader to determine if the Griffons will head to Topeka, Kansas, for the MIAA Tournament next weekend. First pitches are set for 12 and 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Spring Sports Complex. The Griffons will honor seniors Hawkins, Pederson, Kylie DeHook, Rian Gere and Maddie Swanson once the games have concluded.
