KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Missouri Western Baseball beat Truman State in seven innings on Tuesday, winning 16-4 thanks to a season-high 19 hits in an excellent showing at the Bulldog Baseball Complex.
The Griffons (14-30, 10-20 MIAA) set multiple season-bests in the win, including the most hits and most RBI with 16 while tying for most runs scored in a game with 16. Seven different Griffons had two or more hits in the game, and
Ryan Neise led the way with a season-high four hits and four RBI.
Will Courtney finished the game with four RBI as well as runs scored, and
Hunter Olson added three runs scored and two RBI.
Truman State (15-27, 5-19 GLVC) gave up an early lead to the Griffons thanks to a
Brenden Andersen single that scored
Jared Munk in the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs snagged two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a double and a sacrifice fly, but a big Griffon third inning proved to be more than TSU could handle, giving the Griffs the lead for good this time.
Bryson McArn got the inning started with a home run to center field, and Munk slammed a home run to left field, giving the Griffs back-to-back home runs to start the inning. The Griffs grabbed two more runs to push the score to 5-2 and extended the lead as the game went on. Five runs on four hits in the fourth pushed the score to 10-2, and three more runs in the sixth inning made it 13-2.
Truman State got a lead-off home run in the sixth inning to make it 13-3 and another homer two batters later to make it 13-4, extending the game and avoiding the run-rule defeat. Not to be deterred, Courtney brought home two runs thanks to an error at second base to push the score to 15-4.
Zach Hanlan drove Courtney in two batters later to push the score to 16-4.
Truman grabbed a hit and took two walks in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout to first base with the bases loaded ended the game, giving the Griffons the 16-4 win.
Lynden Bruegman got the win in relief for the Griffons, earning him his first win of the season. Five different pitchers saw action for the Griffs in the win, and MWSU did not record an error all game.
