JOPLIN, Mo. — Highlighted by a record-breaking day by
Sydni Hawkins, Saturday's doubleheader was decided by a pair of four-run innings, allowing Griffon Softball to split with No. 25 Missouri Southern at the Lipira Softball Complex.
GAME ONE
Missouri Southern 7, Missouri Western 6
Benefiting from a dual-threat attack, Southern jumped ahead early in the bottom of the first thanks to a three-run home run by pitcher Kara Amos. The Griffons fired right back in the third, however, when
Jada Collins walked with the bases loaded to put Missouri Western on the board. Pitcher
Harley Pruetting then helped her own cause with a two-run infield single, plating
Kalee Higdon and
Kaylea Fessler to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lions put up four runs in the fifth, as Leighton Withers capped off the frame off with a three-run blast to left field. The Griffons put up a fight in the seventh, scoring three runs to make Southern sweat.
Bubba Hoelscher made it a 7-6 deficit with a sacrifice fly to score
Rian Gere, but the Griffons left two runners on base to lose 7-6.
GAME TWO
Missouri Western 4, Southern 1
While Southern (34-9, 19-3 MIAA) did score first once again, MWSU used its own four-run inning to keep the Lions at bay. Once MSSU took a 1-0 lead in the third,
Maddie Swanson got the party started for the Griffons in the fifth, singling in
Kylie DeHook. Hawkins gave her team a 2-1 lead with an RBI single up the middle that brought home Gere.
Hoelscher added more insurance with a two-run single to left, as Hawkins and
Kate Voisin came around to make it a 4-1 Griffon lead. Pitcher
Sam Pederson kept Southern subdued for the second half of the day, striking out six Lions while only allowing five hits in seven innings to seal the 4-1 win.
