Griffons drop doubleheader in Pittsburg

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Missouri Western Softball dropped a pair of heartbreakers on Friday, losing 4-2 and 4-3 at the Pittsburg State Softball Complex.

GAME ONE
Pitt State 4, Missouri Western 2
Getting ahead early, Pitt State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Heather Arnett stole home. Arnett did so again in the third, giving PSU a 2-0 lead. Kalee Higdon cut the deficit in half with a solo home run to right-center field in the fourth. Now facing a 4-1 disadvantage in the fifth, Sydni Hawkins blasted a solo shot to right, but that was all game one wrote for MWSU's offense.

GAME TWO
Pitt State 4, Missouri Western 3
This time around in game two, MWSU went up early, taking a 3-0 lead thanks to a big fifth inning. Hawkins started it off with an RBI double  to center, scoring Kate Voisin. Liz Vaupel followed that up with a two-run single up the middle, plating Abby Dickey and Hawkins. After putting up one run in the sixth, Pitt (25-17, 10-10 MIAA) closed out the game in dramatic fashion.

After Arnett tied up the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the seventh, Paxtyn Hayes walked it off for PSU with an infield single to second base, scoring Kyndall Davis to win the game. Pitcher Sam Pederson threw 6.2 innings, striking out seven while giving up all four earned runs.

NOTABLES
  •  Vaupel recorded a career-high two RBI.
  • Pederson leads the team with 133 strikeouts this season.
  • This is only the second time MWSU has been swept in a doubleheader this season.
