ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Only trailing once all afternoon, Griffon Softball swept Truman State in a non-conference doubleheader thanks to a pair of solid pitching performances from
Harley Pruetting and
Sam Pederson at the Spring Sports Complex.
GAME ONE
Missouri Western 7, Truman State 3
The Bulldogs jumped ahead early in Tuesday's 2 p.m. game, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a Brooke Nutter sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Pruetting answered right back with a sac fly of her own in the fourth, lifting a pitch to right field to plate
Mackenzie DeVine. Now tied at 1-1, MWSU went to work, taking the lead on a
Bubba Hoelscher RBI single that brought home
Kate Voisin.
The Griffons' fourth-inning attack continued on, as
Kennedy Preston singled through the left side to score Hoelscher and
Jada Collins, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Abby Dickey doubled to left field moments later, driving in Preston to end MWSU's batting barrage. DeVine capped off the Griffons' overall scoring by doubling home
Taylor Jones and Hoelscher in the sixth. In the circle, Pruetting pitched 6.2 innings and only gave up two earned runs, leading MWSU to a 7-3 win.
GAME TWO
Missouri Western 3, Truman State 1
Pruetting passed the baton off to Pederson in game two, who promptly went all seven innings while yielding just two hits. Pederson benefited from an early lead, as
Sydni Hawkins stole home while DeVine took second to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead in the first.
Natalee Weber followed that up with an RBI poke to left field, scoring DeVine.
After TSU (13-33) made things interesting with a run in third, the game remained tight until the sixth when
Chloe Armstrong drew a pitch right to the forearm with the bases loaded, notching an RBI and allowing Hawkins to trot home from third. Pederson put the Bulldogs out of business in a decisive seventh inning, recording a one-two-three frame to close out the 3-1 win.
NOTABLES
- Hawkins, Hoelscher and Weber went a collective 8-for-18 at the plate.
- With two runs scored, Hawkins needs eight more to break Morgan Rathmann's all-time runs record of 182.
