Courtney crushes homer in Griffons' 8-7 loss at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo — Although Griffon Baseball held a late 7-4 lead over Maryville, Missouri Western fell to a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th on Tuesday at Weber Baseball Field.

The Griffons (11-29) led most of the game, taking a 5-0 advantage early. Hunter Olson gave MWSU the lead in the first with an RBI single up the middle, plating Bryson McArn. Olson came home moments later after an RBI double by Will Courtney, giving the Griffs a 2-0 lead.

Later up 4-0 in the fifth, Courtney crushed a solo home run to left field to top off MWSU's 5-0 spurt. Maryville (24-12) slowly chipped back with a run in the fifth and three more in the eighth to make it a 5-4 game. The Griffons padded their lead in the ninth, as Zach Hanlan scored Travis Wiese with a sacrifice fly. Jackson Bryant followed that up with an RBI single through the right side, pushing MWSU's lead to 7-4.

Maryville's Camden Ruby hit a three-run home run in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. After Elias Stevens blasted a solo shot in the eighth, he did so again in the 10th with a walk-off homer to center field, winning the game 8-7.

Courtney led the Griffons with three hits and two RBI, while Wiese, Olson, Hanlan, Bryant and Hunter Rumachik all added one RBI. The Griffons outhit the Saints 13-10, and neither team committed an error in the game.
