ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Sydni Hawkins tied the Missouri Western Softball all-time doubles record,
Natalee Weber had a five-hit day, while
Harley Pruetting fired a five-hit shutout as the Griffons picked up a doubleheader sweep of Emporia State on Saturday at the Spring Sports Complex, winning 8-0 and 9-2.
GAME ONE
Missouri Western 8, Emporia State 0 (5 innings)
The Griffons used a four-run third inning, keyed by a three-run homer off the bat of
Jada Collins to jump ahead 4-0.
Mackenzie DeVine's two-run double gave the Griffs a 6-0 lead in the fifth, while a two-run single by
Kalee Higdon invoked the eight-run rule.
Pruetting was masterful in the circle, scattering five hits, walking none and fanning nine en route to her 13th win of the season. Higdon had a team-high three hits with two RBI, while Weber and DeVine had two hits apiece in the win.
GAME TWO
Missouri Western 9, Emporia State 2
The Griffs jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after a three-run first inning and a four-run fourth. Emporia State (19-15, 3-7 MIAA) was able to break through in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs, but DeVine went deep with a two-run shot that set the score at the game's final margin.
Weber led the Griffons with three hits, while Hawkins and DeVine added a pair of hits apiece.
Sam Pederson got the win in the circle after scattering seven runs over seven innings of work, allowing two runs — both earned — and fanning seven.
