ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Griffon Softball senior
Sydni Hawkins tasted a sliver of history on Sunday, tying the program's-time hits record in a split with No. 15 Washburn at the Spring Sports Complex.
With 265 career hits, Hawkins needs one more knock to pass Morgan Rathmann (2014-17) and become Missouri Western's new all-time leading hitter. Hawkins singled twice in game two, tying the record in her second-to-last at-bat of the day.
GAME ONE
Washburn 8, Missouri Western 3
Giving up two runs in the top of the first, MWSU responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame, as Hawkins scored on a wild pitch by Jaycee Ginter.
Jada Collins tied the game with an RBI rip to right-center field, beginning a scoreless drought that both teams endured for the next four innings. After Washburn went ahead 3-2 in the sixth,
Harley Pruetting plated
Taylor Jones with an RBI single to right center and tied the game up once again.
However, Washburn exploded for five runs in the seventh, taking game one 8-3. Pruetting pitched 6.2 innings and gave up all eight runs, but only three of them were earned.
GAME TWO
Missouri Western 5, Washburn 1
Despite an RBI double from Ginter early on in the first inning, game two was all Griffons. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth,
Kennedy Preston sent
Kalee Higdon home with an RBI poke to tie the game. After an
Abby Dickey walk led off the fifth, Hawkins recorded her historic hit with a infield single to third base, setting the Griffons up for a game-changing inning.
Natalee Weber loaded the bases by taking a pitch to the back, putting Pruetting in prime position to break the tie with a two-run single, scoring Dickey and Hawkins.
Up 3-1, a Dickey triple in the sixth brought home
Kylie DeHook. Moments later, Hawkins recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Dickey a chance to tag up and push MWSU's advantage to 5-1. Pitcher
Sam Pederson kept Washburn relatively riddled at the plate, scattering just two hits while striking out three Ichabods in seven innings.

- Dickey's triple is her third this season, tying her for the most on the team with Hawkins and Mackenzie DeVine
