Griffons smash 17 hits in power struggle vs. NSU

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Nearly rallying in the ninth inning, Griffon Baseball fell 10-9 in Friday's game one vs. Northeastern State that featured five ties and six lead changes at the Spring Sports Complex.

After a back-and-forth battle Northeastern State (13-16, 7-11 MIAA) went into the top of the ninth down 8-7. With pitcher David Steffen looking for the save, NSU put together a three-run frame to put the RiverHawks up 10-8 thanks to a pair of RBI doubles. However, Missouri Western did not go away without a fight.

With one out in the ninth, Bryson McArn reached base via a walk, setting up a Jerry Nix single up the middle to put McArn in scoring position. The Griffons immediately made the most of the opportunity, as Brenden Andersen ripped an RBI single through the right side to plate McArn and make it a 10-9 game. After a Hunter Olson strikeout, Jared Munk was intentionally walked to load the bases for Will Courtney. With a chance to complete the Griffons' first walk-off win of the season, Courtney fouled out to first base, stranding three runners and sealing the 10-9 final.

NOTABLES
  • Andersen went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Three Griffons recorded three hits: Andersen; Olson; and Courtney.
  • McArn hit his team-high third triple of the season and his second in his last three games.
