Griffons lose late lead vs. Truman State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Just as soon as Griffon Baseball found themselves with a lead, Truman State shot back with a three-run eighth inning to take Tuesday's non-conference matchup at the Spring Sports Complex, 5-4.

Truman State (7-6) led for most of the game, taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when Travis Wiese sent a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Jerry Nix to tag up and score from third to tie the game at 2-2. One inning later in the seventh, Nix gave Missouri Western (3-11, 0-6 MIAA) its first and only lead with an RBI single to center field, bringing home Jared Munk.

Just half a frame later in the eighth, Truman's Luke Turner cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line, putting the Bulldogs up, 5-3. Brenden Andersen scored from third while Halen David was caught trying to steal second in the eighth, but the Griffons went down in the ninth to lose their ninth-straight game.

NOTABLES
  • Turner drove in four runs for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.
  • Nix went 2-of-2 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Andersen led all Griffs at the dish, hitting 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Munk and Kellen Scruggs both also doubled for MWSU.
  • Zack Cushing pitched two innings with no hits or walks given up, striking out three Bulldogs in the process.
