Big innings hurt Griffon Baseball vs. Central Missouri

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.  Battling with Central Missouri through four scoreless innings, Griffon Baseball fell 14-7 after the Mules put together back-to-back high-octane innings on Tuesday at the Spring Sports Complex.

Central Missouri (22-8, 14-3 MIAA) landed a six spot on the board in the fifth, with Chase Wilcox ripping an RBI single to second base to make it a 6-0 game. Jerry Nix responded for the Griffons in bottom half of the frame, singling home Will Courtney to get Missouri Western on the board. Seven more UCM runs in the sixth made it a 13-1 game, putting the Griffons in danger of a run-rule loss.

Missouri Western came through with some small-ball plays in the sixth, scoring on an error and a fielder's choice to make it a 13-3 game. Courtney scored the fourth run of the inning after a Kellen Scruggs strikeout, taking home plate after a wild pitch by UCM's Jacob Merithew. Cale Sackewitz sent a two-RBI single up the middle in the eighth to plate Courtney and Zach Hanlan, but the Mules closed down any comeback attempt by leaving one Griffon stranded on base in the ninth.

NOTABLES
  • Courtney scored a season-high three runs and walked twice.
  • Bryson McArn hit his second triple of the season, taking a pitch down the right-field line in the sixth.
  • Both teams committed three errors.
