ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — In their highest-scoring game of the season, Griffon Baseball ignited for 11 runs in the first inning to eventually take Washburn down 16-9 on Sunday at the Spring Sports Complex.
Out of the 11 Griffon runs scored in the bottom of the first, only three were batted in, as the Washburn pitching staff walked four batters and hit four more. The first inning was highlighted by by a two-RBI
Jared Munk single to left field, plating
Kellen Scruggs and
Travis Wiese. Munk brought home another run with a single to right in the second, pushing the Griffon lead to 12-1.
Washburn (19-11, 12-4 MIAA) made things interesting with a six-run spot in the third and two more in the fourth, cutting MWSU's lead to 12-9. After a Washburn error at second base allowed
Cale Sackewitz to score MWSU's 13th run in the seventh,
Jerry Nix put the exclamation point on MWSU's explosive day with a three-run home to left field. Pitcher
Carson Aycock took to the rubber for the final three innings, throwing three scoreless frames with only two hits allowed and one strikeout to boot.

- Blake Van Hercke pitched 3.1 innings, qualifying him for his first win of the season.
