HAYS, Kan. — Thanks to an overwhelming approach at the plate in the first contest, Griffon Softball stretched their winning streak to 10 before dropping game two of Sunday's doubleheader vs. Fort Hays State at Tiger Stadium.
GAME 1
Missouri Western 8, Fort Hays 2
The Griffons wasted barely any time in the first game, taking an 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a pair of RBI singles from
Liz Vaupel and
Jada Collins. After a
Kennedy Preston sacrifice fly in the third,
Bubba Hoelscher hammered a solo home run to left field to make it a 4-0 Griffon lead. Missouri Western was guided to an 8-0 lead and eventual 8-2 win thanks to a strong performance by pitcher
Sam Pederson, who struck out five Tigers while only giving up two earned runs throughout seven innings of work.
GAME 2
Fort Hays 3, Missouri Western 2
Mackenzie DeVine put MWSU (11-4, 1-1 MIAA) up early in the top of third, slashing a single to center to score
Abby Dickey. Fort Hays took a 2-1 lead after Carly Stuke sent a two-run shot to left field in the fourth inning.
Harley Pruetting answered back in the fifth with a solo blast to left field, knotting the game at 2-2. The Tigers (13-9, 2-2 MIAA) took their final lead after a Griffon error kicked off the bottom half of the frame, allowing to Adysen Burghart to score on Loren Beggs' sacrifice fly later on. The Griffons left two runners on base in the seventh to close out the 3-2 final.
NOTABLES
- Preston tallied three RBI in game one, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
- Sydni Hawkins' 13-game hitting streak came to an end after an 0-for-5 showing in game one. Hawkins went 2-for-3 in game two.
- Hawkins also tripled for the third time this season during game two, tying DeVine for the most on the team.
- Game one marks Pederson's third complete game of the season, pushing her record to 5-0.
- Before it ended, MWSU's 10-game winning streak marks a new team-high under Head Coach Joe Yegge.
