KEARNEY, Neb. — Griffon Softball sorted its way through another MIAA doubleheader split on Monday, dropping game one and winning the latter vs. Nebraska Kearney to wrap up their road stretch at Patriot Park.
GAME 1
Nebraska Kearney 2, Missouri Western 1
Slow and steady was the name of the game in the opening bout, as both pitchers held the other team scoreless for the first two innings. Nebraska Kearney grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of third after Sydney Thomason sent a solo shot to left-center field. A fifth-inning
Abby Dickey RBI single to center brought home
Kalee Higdon, knotting the game at 1-1 apiece.
Sam Pederson guided the Griffons for 6.1 innings, striking out seven Lopers while only giving up two earned runs. However, that final run came way via a Katie Gosker RBI single down the left-field line, driving home Anna Reiling to give UNK the walk-off win, 2-1.
GAME 2
Missouri Western 4, Nebraska Kearney 2
The Griffons (12-5, 2-2 MIAA) struck first this time around, popping off with four runs in the top of the first. The party started when Higdon reached on a fielder's choice, causing chose within the Loper (12-14, 3-1 MIAA) infield. A pair of UNK errors allowed two MWSU runs to score, with both
Jada Collins and
Mackenzie DeVine crossing home plate. In the very next at-bat,
Taylor Bristol brought home Higdon and
Harley Pruetting with a two-out single to right field, notching her first-career base hit in the process.
With the Griffons taking a 4-0 lead, pitcher
Natalie Kissinger went two innings and struck out three before giving up two earned runs in the third. After recording one more out and allowing two more Lopers on base, Kissinger handed the baton off to Pruetting, who did not flinch. Pruetting found a flyout and a strikeout, punching Jaiden Harteker's ticket to leave the Griffons' lead still intact at 4-2. After three more strikeouts and 4.2 scoreless innings from the freshman, the Griffons salvaged the double-dip day with the win.
NOTABLES
- Both teams left seven runners on base in game two.
- Both Pruetting and Pederson are 5-1 this season.
