Griffons lace 16 hits in win over Newman

WICHITA, Kan. — Once the dust settled after 16 Griffon base hits, Missouri Western Baseball found itself with a 10-6 victory over Newman on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Field, stopping an 11-game losing streak in the process.

The top of the first inning came up big for the Griffons (4-13, 1-8 MIAA), as Hunter Olson started the scoring off with an RBI single to left field to bring home Travis Wiese. In the very next at-bat, Riley Higgins crushed a two-run home run to grab a 3-0 lead. Once Newman (10-13, 4-5 MIAA) made it a 4-2 game after four innings, Olson ripped a double to right to score Brenden Andersen in the fifth. Moments later, Hunter Rumachik made it a 6-2 game with an RBI base hit to plate Olson.

Newman's Hayden Vandepol cut the deficit down to one in the sixth with a three-run shot, making it a 6-5 game. However, MWSU brought David Steffen onto the mound immediately afterwards, who then went on to pitch four innings of one-run ball, striking out seven Jets in the process. Missouri Western tacked on four more insurance runs thanks to small-ball scoring from Wiese, Munk and Cale Sacekwitz.
