Griffons battle No. 13 Bronchos in two close losses

EDMOND, Okla. — Griffon Baseball gave No. 13 Central Oklahoma all it wanted on Saturday, but the Bronchos came away with a doubleheader and series sweep on Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field.

GAME 1
UCO 13, MWSU 8
Down by a score of 8-2 after getting behind early due to UCO's five-run bottom of the first, MWSU (3-6, 0-3 MIAA) responded in a big way with a four-run top of the seventh. A Travis Wiese infield single plated Jayden Singleton, leading into a Jackson Bryant double down the left-field line that scored Wiese, Hunter Olson and Brenden Andersen, cutting the Bronchos' lead to 9-8. However, UCO came back with another four-run inning in the eighth, closing the door on a Griffon comeback.

GAME 2
UCO 9, MWSU 8
This time around in game two, MWSU blew the doors open with its own four-run first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Jerry Nix. Olson sent a solo shot to left-center field an inning later, giving his Griffs a 5-0 lead. However, UCO slowly chipped away at MWSU's margin, eventually tying the game at 5-5 in the fifth after Noah Olson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A pair of two-run innings in the seventh and eighth fortified the Bronchos' lead, as MWSU's three-run ninth came up just short.

NOTABLES
  • Missouri Western walked seven times in game one and 11 times overall throughout the doubleheader.
  • The Griffons smashed five extra-base hits between both games, including a home run apiece by Nix and Olson.
  • Wiese finished the day with four total RBI, while Jackson Bryant collected three in game one.
