ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — While Nebraska Kearney was busy blowing a 13-point lead,
JaRon Thames blew out his birthday candles with a 23-point outburst to lead Missouri Western to a must-have win on Thursday at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
Freshly feeling 22, Thames led the Griffons to an 83-78 victory to snap a three-game skid and keep Missouri Western's MIAA Tournament hopes alive. That almost wasn't the case in the first half, as MWSU (12-15, 8-13 MIAA) trailed UNK, 36-23, with just over three minutes to play in the first half. The Lopers (5-22, 3-18 MIAA) were led by 21 first-half points by Darrian Nebeker, taking a 38-29 edge into halftime.
Slowly but surely, the Griffons kicked their offense into another gear in the second half, trimming UNK's lead down to three with 7:48 to play thanks to a
Julius Dixon layup. Thames torched all of UNK's momentum a minute later, scoring a bucket with a foul to boot, converting the and-one play to tie the game at 59-59.
Reed Kemp completed the 9-0 run with a midrange jumper to give the Griffons their first lead since the 7:42 mark of the first half.
Kearney took the lead back one more time thanks to a 3-pointer by Matt Brien, but another Thames layup led to a
Reese Glover triple, putting Missouri Western up for good and igniting a 22-14 Griffon run to close out the night.
