KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Julius Dixon scored a career-high 22 points while JaRon Thames added 21, leading Griffon Men's Basketball to a 92-76 win over Rockhurst on Wednesday at the Mason-Halpin Field House.
Dixon and Thames' stellar scoring performances led the Griffons (3-0) in the contest. Thames added six rebounds and two steals. Taye Fields also helped out with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Kiani Saxon and Zion Swader rounded out the starting five's scoring efforts with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Rockhurst falls to 1-2.
After playing to a 23-23 tie, Missouri Western State went on a 12-0 run with 9:18 left in the first half to take a 35-23 lead. The Griffons then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 47-34 advantage.
Following intermission, Missouri Western kept widening that lead, expanding it to 74-57 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 79-57 with 7:06 to go in the contest. The Hawks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Griffons still cruised the rest of the way for the 92-76 win. Missouri Western capitalized on five Rockhurst turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
Missouri Western shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up a season-high 19 assists on 36 made field goals. Fields' six assists led the Griffons, and Swader also added a career0hugh six assists of his own.
The Missouri Western defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 13 Rockhurst turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Thames' two steals led the way individually for the Griffons.
