EDMOND. Okl. — Griffon Softball only needed two more runs to sweep No. 19 Central Oklahoma, but settling for a split will have to do for now.
Game 1
MWSU 3, UCO 2
Saturday's first game against the Bronchos (27-6, 6-1) saw ace vs. ace — advantage
Sydney Rader, as the Griffons (14-13, 6-2 MIAA) won 3-2. The offense found just enough early against Kylee Lynch (14-1) thanks to
Natalee Weber's RBI single in the second.
Sydni Hawkins smashed a solo shot in the fifth, and
Emma Hoffart hammered an RBI double in seventh to make it 3-0, Griffons.
Rader (8-5) held UCO scoreless until the final frame when Shayla Harper doubled to center field to score two. With Harper on second with two out, Brighton Gilbert lined out to left fielder
Brea Blanton to close out Rader's team-leading eighth win of the season.
Game 2
UCO 5, MWSU 4
Lynch wasn't quite done with the Griffons in the latter half of the day, however. She came back in a closing role to slam the door on MWSU for a 5-4 Broncho win. Despite this, it didn't come easy for UCO.
Missouri Western went to work early after trailing 1-0 in the first. After
Natalee Weber sent a home run to left field to tie it up,
Sydni Hawkins reached base on an infield hit to second, scoring
Rachel Stewart. Two more UCO runs off of
Natalie Kissinger gave UCO another lead, but a two-run belt over the center-field wall by
Chloe Armstrong gave the Griffons new life for the time being at 4-4.
Harper kept to her clutch-htting ways in this game, following up the Griffons' fifth frame with an RBI single to score the go-ahead run. Lynch entered the game in the sixth, and with runners on first and second, Weber popped into a double play at first to end the day. This loss ends the Griffons' seven-game winning streak — their longest run since they won 18 in a row during the 2019 season.
