Griffon Softball Swept by Ichabods

TOPEKA, Ks. — After winning eight of their last nine games, Griffon Softball cooled down this Friday after being swept by the Ichabods.

Game 1

Washburn 8, MWSU 1

A 13-strikeout performance by Washburn pitcher Jaycee Ginter shut the Griffons (14-16, 5-5 MIAA) down for an 8-1 result to begin the doubleheader. After two scoreless innings, Washburn (26-11, 8-2) got to pitcher Sydney Rader (8-6) with a three-run third. Bubba Hoelscher made it 4-1 with a solo home run in the sixth, but the Ichabods responded with four more runs to seal the deal.

Game 2

Washburn 6, MWSU 4

While the Griffons led early and were in the game all evening long, the Ichabods escaped with a 6-5 victory and the sweep. Missouri Western went ahead early when Sydni Hawkins scored on a Chloe Armstrong triple down the right-field line. However, Washburn jumped on starting pitcher Natalie Kissinger for four runs in the first.

The Griffons fired back in the fourth with four runs of their own, capped off by an Emma Hoffart RBI single to left that scored Mackenzie DeVine. Just like the first inning, though, Washburn sot right back — this time thanks to a Ginter triple to right. Ginter later came in to pitch with two outs in the eighth and rest of the ninth, striking out two more Griffons to seal the sweep.

Next Up

The Griffons prepare for another MIAA matchup on Saturday, this time against Emporia State (18-16, 7-3 MIAA). The doubleheader is set for 2 and 4 p.m.
