JOPLIN, Mo -- Of the season-high 11 saves by
Anna Mayer on Friday night, none would be bigger than her stop in the 93rd minute to preserve Missouri Western's 2-2 draw at Missouri Southern.
Jaden Skinner and
Lauren Street scored for the Griffons, who were playing their third overtime match of the road trip.
The Lions opened the scoring in the 18th minute off the foot of Jori Hays, whose hopeful shot went just under the crossbar over the outstretched hands of Mayer.
Missouri Western equalized in the 33rd minute, as Skinner collected a throw-in from
Elizabeth Musilek, turned between two defenders and laced a shot into the upper corner of the near post. Just five minutes later, MWSU earned a penalty kick, with Street converting to put the Griffons in front 2-1.
A bit of luck gave MSSU the chance to equalize in the 52nd minute, as Missouri Western was whistled for a handball just outside of the 18-yard box. Maya Greenquist struck a low line-drive into the far corner. With the traffic in front, Mayer was screened but nearly got a glove on it to push it wide.
Both teams had chances to win in regulation, and Missouri Southern had the first solid chance in overtime. The Griffons were whistled for a penalty kick as
Lillian Davis got tangled up with a Lions attacker chasing down a long ball. Greenquist stepped to the spot, but Mayer read the kick perfectly and leapt high and left to punch it clear.
The Griffons had a pair of solid chances to close out the first overtime period, but the match ended deadlocked.
Missouri Western will close out its four-game road trip on Sunday, taking on Northwest Missouri State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Marshall.
