ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western baseball team dropped both game of its doubleheader with Pittsburg State Saturday as they lost all three games of the series at the Spring Sports Complex. The Griffons came up short in the opener, 7-6, and fell in game two, 5-2. MWSU is now 10-26 and 8-22 in the MIAA.
GAME 1 – Pittsburg State 7, Missouri Western 6
The Gorillas jumped out to a 4-0 lead before
Gustavo Gonzalez hit a two-run home run for the Griffons in the second inning. PSU scored two in the fifth to extend its lead, but Missouri Western answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 6-5 game. Pitt State was able to get a two-out run in the eighth inning before
Maurice Bruce hit a solo home run to pull the Griffs back within one run, but that's all they'd get.
Ben Tsui,
Alex Crouch and
Andrew Meier added the other RBI for the Griffons.
Brock Wrolstad took the loss as he gave up four runs on five hits in just 2+ innings.
GAME 2 – Pittsburg State 5, Missouri Western 2
Crouch got Missouri Western off to a good start with a solo home run in the first inning, before the Gorillas evened things up with a run in the fourth inning. The game stayed that way until Pittsburg exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh, and that turned out to be enough. MWSU got an RBI single from
Jared Munk in the eight inning and they had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but weren't able to score any runs.
Ryan Neise led MWSU with two hits, while Gonzales,
Brady Holden and
Bailey Crump also had base hits.
Jordan Akins suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed two earned runs and five hits in 6+ innings of work.

Missouri Western will wrap up its season next weekend with a three-game series at Central Missouri beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Warrensburg.
