ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western softball team swept a doubleheader against Newman Friday at the Spring Sports Complex. The Griffons won the opener, 2-0, and took game two, 8-0. MWSU improves to 19-9 this season and 8-2 in the MIAA.
GAME 1 – Missouri Western 2, Newman 0
Sydney Rader threw a complete game shutout in the circle and the Griffons got two-out RBI singles from
Sierra Culver and
Taylor Hoelscher for the victory. Rader allowed five hits in her seven innings and she struck out four.
Culver drove in Hoelscher in the second inning with a base hit to center and Hoelscher knocked in
Emma Hoffart with a ground ball up the middle in the fifth.
Culver and
Sydni Hawkins led MWSU with two hits each.
GAME 2 – Missouri Western 8, Newman 0
MWSU starter
Kaili Hinds threw a five-inning no-hitter in game two as she need just 55 pitches to throw the shutout. Hinds struck out three and there was just one Griffon error.
Missouri Western scored one run in the first inning without getting a hit as they weren't able to get their first hit until the fourth inning. They then scored two runs in the fourth and capped it off with a five-run fifth inning.
Rian Gere hit a three-run walk-off home run to end the game.
Five different Griffons had hits and eight Griffons scored runs. Culver had two RBI, while Hoffart, Hoelscher and
Chloe Armstrong added one run batted in each.
