Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Western lacrosse team earned the first road win of its inaugural season Friday at Maryville as they beat the Saints 13-7. The Griffons improve to 4-7 this season and 2-3 in the GLVC.
After the two teams traded goals in the first three and half minutes, MWSU controlled the rest of the half as they scored back-to-back goals and used a 7-1 run to take an 8-2 lead into the locker room at halftime. Maryville scored the first goal of the second half, but the Griffons answered with three straight to extend their lead to eight and they cruised to their second win over the Saints this season.
Jordan Shughrue led Missouri Western with four goals,
Karlin York added three,
Madison Iandoli and
Jorja Schooler scored two each, while
Alex Shaffer and
Brooke Freeman each found the back of the net once for their first career goals at MWSU.
The Griffons had six assists on Friday, which is tied for the second most in a game this season, as
Madison Brady tied her career-high with four and Iandoli set a new career-high with two.
Mackenzie Porter made 11 saves in goal for the Griffs and she had three ground balls. It's the sixth time this season she's had double figure saves.
Missouri Western outshot Maryville 34-27, including 25-18 shots on goal. The Griffons had six more draw controls, 14-8, as Iandoli led the way with seven. MWSU committed 27 turnovers on Friday, but the Saints had 23.
Missouri Western is back in action Sunday as they return home for their final game at Spratt Stadium this season. The Griffons square off with Quincy at 1:00 p.m. Sunday and the game will be on the GLVC Network.
