Lacrosse falls to Rockhurst 21-20 in OT in GLVC opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western women's lacrosse team let a nine-goal lead slip away in the second half at Rockhurst Friday and the Griffons lost 21-20 in overtime in their first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference game.  MWSU drops to 2-5 this season and 0-1 in league play.

After a back-and-forth first half in which the Griffon led the Hawks at halftime 9-7, Missouri Western dominated the first 12 minutes of the second half.  Jordan Shughrue, who scored a school record 10 goals in the game, scored five goals during a 9-2 run to start the second half and MWSU led 18-9 with 18:44 left in regulation.  That's when Rockhurst turned things around and started to make their comeback.

The Hawks used an 11-1 run over the next 15 minutes and scored nine straight goals to regain the lead, 20-19, with 3:13 left in the second half.  Madison Brady was able to tie the game for the Griffons less than a minute later and neither team was able to break the tie as the game went to overtime.

Both teams had early chances to win the sudden death OT as MWSU's Brady had a free position shot with 2:12 left that went wide and that was followed up by a spectacular save from Griffon goalkeeper Mackenzie Porter on a shot by Rockhurst.  Missouri Western then turned the ball over with less than a minute left and the Hawks' Marianna Anderson scored with 25 second remaining in overtime.

Turnovers plagued the Griffons all afternoon as they had 20 to RU's eight and Rockhurst had 26 ground balls to Missouri Western's 13.  MWSU dominated draw control 27-16 but they were only able to clear 12 of their 18 attempts.

Shughrue was incredible in for Missouri Western as she added 13 draw controls to go along with her 10 goals.  That was five more goals than any Griffon has scored in a game during their inaugural season.  Brady added six points as she had four goals and two assists.  Madison Iandoli added two goals, while Jazmine Servance, Olivia Futrell, Karlin York and Amani Robinson scored one goal each.

Missouri Western returns home next weekend for two more GLVC games.  They host #2 Indianapolis at 7:00 p.m. next Friday at Spratt Stadium and then Lewis comes to St. Joseph on Sunday, April 11 at 12:00 p.m.
