Baseball Wins Series Opener At Newman, 6-4

WICHITA, Kan. – The Missouri Western baseball team won its second consecutive game as they opened their three-game series at Newman Friday with a 6-4 victory.  MWSU improves to 4-11 this season and 3-7 in the MIAA.

The Griffons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Sal Jacobo and Chaz Verduzco.  Newman answered back with one run in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Missouri Western's Ben Tsui then hit a solo home run to tie the game in the seventh before the Griffs pulled away with a three-run eighth inning.  MWSU scored two runs on an error and a passed ball before Verduzco drove in his second run.

Alex Crouch led the Griffons with three hits, while Jacobo had two hits and two runs, and Verduzco went 2-for-3.

Jared Wells had a quality start for MWSU as he went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits.  Wells struck out six and walked four.  Robert Farrell (1-0) earned the win in relief with 1.2 scoreless innings and Jacob Weirich got the last two outs to picked up his first save.
