Griffons Lose to Washburn in Central Regional Quarterfinals

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Missouri Western men's basketball team had its season come to an end Saturday night as they lost to Washburn, 72-46, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Central Regional.  The Griffons end the season 14-11 as this was their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 11 years.

MWSU fell behind early as Washburn used a 10-0 run to build a 13-4 before the Griffons were able to battle back because of their defense.  Missouri Western held the Ichabods scoreless for six and half minutes and they used an 11-2 run to regain the lead, 21-20, with just over four minutes left in the first half.  That was the last lead the Griffs would have.

WU scored the final seven points of the first half and then went on a 15-1 run to start the second half and Missouri Western was never able to recover.  The Griffons had their worst offensive night of the season as they shot only 28.6 percent (16-56) from the field and made 2-of-15 three-point field goals.  They missed their first 13 three's before making their final two in the game.  MWSU also got outrebounded 44-36 and had only five offensive rebounds on the night.

Tyrell Carroll led Missouri Western with 21 points, while Will Eames added nine points and 10 rebounds.  It was the first time all season that only one player scored in double figures, and it was the first time all season only five players scored in the game.

This was the first time since 2010 that MWSU made a regional, but it was their 15th consecutive loss in the NCAA Tournament.

Washburn advances to the regional semifinal and they'll play Northwest Missouri State at 7:45 p.m. Sunday night.
