EMPORIA, Kan. – The Missouri Western men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as they lost at Emporia State, 82-71. The Griffons fall to 11-9 this season and the Hornets are now 9-10.
The two teams traded leads for the first 18 minutes of the game as there were 10 lead changes and five ties. The game was tied 35-35 and then ESU went on an 8-2 run to end the half and took a 43-37 lead.
Emporia State then took control of the game.
Missouri Western missed its first eight shots of the second half and the Hornets went on a 15-2 run to eventually build a 19-point lead, 60-41. After a timeout, the Griffons were able to use their full-court pressure to forced six turnovers in a five-minute span as they answered back with a 14-2 run to pull within seven, 62-55, with 7:45 left in the game. ESU was able to hold off the MWSU rally as the lead was down to seven two more times late in the game, but that was as close as the Griffs would get.
Missouri Western shot just 40.3% (25-62) from the field and they were 21.7% (5-23) from the three-point line, while Emporia finished 56.6% (30-53) overall and they went 6-of-12 from three. The Hornets outrebounded MWSU 37-29.
Will Eames led the Griffons with 22 points and nine rebounds, while
Tyrell Carroll scored 17.
Q Mays added 16 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists.
