Saturday marks the final home contest of the season for Missouri Western, as the Griffons look to move to the .500 mark on the 2021 season against the University of Central Missouri. Before kickoff, we will be recognizing a number of outstanding football student-athletes who will be playing in their final game at Spratt Stadium. At halftime we will also recognize the members of our cheer squad and the Mystics dance team who will be graduating during the 2021-22 academic year.
Last Week
Missouri Western matched a school record with 32 first downs and put up 412 rushing yards in a 45-28 romp over Missouri Southern.
Reagan Jones ran for three touchdowns and connected with
Cooper Burton for a passing TD as well.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Evan Chohon and
Kobe Cummings led the charge with 15 and 14 tackles respectively, with each also adding 1.5 TFL on the afternoon.
Thomas Kopcho connected on his only field goal attempt of the afternoon, a 20-yard chipshot in the 2nd quarter, and was a perfect 6-6 on PATs.
Last Time vs. UCM
After a 31-point second half comeback by the Griffons and 1,206 yards of combined offense, a 23-yard field goal was the difference between Missouri Western and No. 21 Central Missouri. Chris Diddle's chip shot field goal in overtime gave Central Missouri a 48-45 win at Spratt Stadium on Sept. 22, 2019.
Missouri Western trailed 31-0 to the Mules with 6:39 left in the third quarter, but a 91-yard kickoff return TD by
Trey Vaval sparked a Griffon comeback that saw MWSU tie the game at 45-45 with 1:02 left in regulation and stopped a last-minute Central Missouri drive at the 4-yard line.
Coaches
Matt Williamson is in his fifth season as the head coach for Missouri Western. In his third tenure on the sidelines for the Griffons, he's posted a 23-20 (.535) record, with a 21-20 mark in MIAA play.
Jim Svoboda is in his 11th season at the helm for Central Missouri, and has an 84-42 record for the Mules.Â
Series History
Missouri Western is 17-18-1 in 36 games against Central Missouri, although the Griffons have lost the last five meetings. Three of those five games were decided by less than a touchdown, with the 2015 contest separated by just one point as the Griffons held Central Missouri to four field goals before giving up a last-gasp touchdown to the no. 20 Mules in a 18-17 loss.
