Campbell Finds Scoring Touch In 2-0 Win At Rogers State

Box Score CLAREMORE, Okla. -- After leading the Griffons with five shots on goal in a 1-0 loss at Northeastern State, Kaili Campbell found her scoring touch on Sunday afternoon with a pair of goals at Rogers State. Missouri Western bounced back into the win column with a 2-0 result against the Hillcats. Anna Mayer was called upon to make just two saves en route to her sixth shutout of the year.
Campbell opened the scoring in the 15th minute, as Eszter Toth dribbled past a Hillcat defender then played a trailing pass to Campbell, who rocketed a shot to the near post.
Roger State had a chance to equalize in the 17th minute, but the shot from Brooke Amos bounced harmlessly into the hands of Mayer.
The Griffons nearly added a second in the 20th minute, earning a corner kick as Campbell's shot glanced off a defender and wide left. Unfortunately, the corner kick sailed through a crowd in the 18-yard box and out for a goal kick.
Mayer was tested a bit more firmly in the 38th minute, as the Griffon netminder was forced into a diving save low and to her right. She pushed Libby Doyle's shot around the far post for a corner kick, but the Hillcats weren't able to capitalize.
Campbell doubled the Griffon lead in the 53rd minute, finishing off a counterattack from an RSU corner kick. The Griffons were able to build quickly into transition and as Tina Palmieri raced through midfield, she spotted Campbell streaking up the left wing. Palmieri played a lead pass to Campbell, who was able to take a pair of touches and fire a shot into the far post side netting.
MWSU moves to 8-4-2 (5-2-0 MIAA) on the year, while Rogers State falls to 6-7-1 (1-6-0 MIAA) in 2021. The Griffons return to Spratt Stadium on Friday, hosting Newman University at 7 p.m. The match celebrates Alumni Night, with former Griffon Soccer student-athletes admitted free.
