Football dominant in sixth straight road win

Griffons take down Northeastern State 58-23

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Griffon Football (2-2) put up 620 yards of offense and won its sixth straight game away from home, 58-23, Saturday at Northeastern State (0-4).
 
Missouri Western jumped on the RiverHawks early, scoring touchdowns on its seventh, ninth and 11th plays from scrimmage. After going three-and-out on their first possession of the game, the Griffons had three consecutive two-play touchdown drives that totaled 151 yards.  
 
NOTABLES
  • 371 of the Girffs' yards came on the ground. MWSU ball carriers averaged 8.8 yards per rush and accounted for six of the team's touchdowns.
  • Northeastern State only stopped the Griffons in the backfield once on 42 carries, a three-yard loss late in the fourth quarter.
  • Markel Smith rushed for 112 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 11.2 yards per carry. It was the first time the team had two 100-yard rushers since 2017.
  • Jared Scott rushed for a career-high 110 yards with two touchdowns and an 8.5 yard per carry average.
  • Shamar Griffith carried the ball nine times for 80 yards and Travon Harris got nine carries for 61 yards.
  • Wyatt Steigerwald and Anthony Vespo combined for 10 completions to 10 different receivers.
  • Missouri Western led 51-9 midway through the third quarter when the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to lightning in the area.
  • Kyle Berry caught a 59-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring.
  • Eldridge Joyce's first reception as a Griffon was a 56-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.
  • MWSU led 30-9 after a first quarter that saw the team run just 17 plays for more than 240 yards.
  • Terrance March had a team-high 11 tackles with one for a loss and also forced a fumble.
  • Trey Vaval was held out of the end zone, but was electric again as a return man. The true freshman had two punt returns for 38 yards and three kick returns for 104 yards.
