Hot Start Lifts Football to Seventh Straight Road Win

Griffs dominate Washburn in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – Griffon Football won on the road for the seventh straight time, dominating Washburn from start to finish on Saturday, 46-21.
 
The Griffons used 144 first quarter rushing yards to jump out to a 21-7 after one quarter, forcing two Washburn turnovers in the quarter.
 
NOTABLES
  • The Griffons' 503 offensive yards gave the program three consecutive 500-plus-yard performances for the first time in MWSU history.
  • Shamar Griffith became the third Griffon back to rush for over 100 yards (113) in the last two weeks.
  • After rushing for more than 300 yards last week, MWSU rand for 267 on Washburn.
  • Eight of those rushing yards came on a backward pass to offensive tackle Shawn Rouse for a touchdown early in the second quarter.
  • Rouse became the 15th different Griffon to score a touchdown this season, the 14th offensive player after Jhaidyn Richardson put the Griffs on the board with his first career TD.
  • Sam Aviles gave the Griffons their first made field goal of the season with a 46-yarder into the wind in the fourth quarter.
  • Markel Smith at least temporarily captured the MIAA rushing touchdown lead with two more to bring his season total to seven.
  • 12 different Griffons caught passes on 32 total completions by Wyatt Steigerwald (16-25) and Anthony Vespo (6-7) after spreading the ball to 10 different receivers last week.
