Griffon Volleyball escapes Emporia with a win

Griffs win in five for first time since 2017

EMPORIA, Kan. – Griffon Volleyball (7-4) snapped a three game skid and picked up its first MIAA win of the season Thursday night at Emporia State (4-8). It wasn't easy, as the teams traded sets until the Griffons were able to score the final three points of the fifth set to give the team its first five set victory since Nov. 17, 2017.
 
NOTABLES
  • The Griffs picked up their first five set victory since the semifinals of the 2017 MIAA Championships (Central Oklahoma).
  • MWSU used an 8-0 run to stake a 24-14 lead in the first set. Sam Duncan ended the set with a kill to answer three straight Hornet points.
  • MWSU hit .378 in the first set with 15 kills
  • The Hornets led the second 20-15 before the Griffs used an 8-2 run to take a 23-22 lead. ESU got it to set point with back-to-back kills and eventually evened the match with a 26-24 set win.
  • Four ESU errors late in the third, helped the Griffs close out the set on a 6-1 run.
  • A .051 hitting percentage for the Griffs in the fourth helped ESU force a fifth set, 25-19
  • The Griffs led the fifth 13-11 before the Hornets rattled off three straight out of a timeout to serve match point, 14-13. Marian Carbin countered with a timeout of her own and the Griffs responded with kills from Lauren Murphy, Sam Duncan and Danielle Moje to close it out. 
  • Ali Tauchen turned in her fourth straight 11-plus kill performance and eighth of the season with 14 on a .306 hitting percentage to go with nine total blocks and two aces for 21 total points.
  • Sam Duncan matched her career-high with a season-high 14 kills
  • Lauren Murphy had 43 assists, her second most of the season and added five kills.
  • Tiana Butler bested her career-high dig total by 13 with 37.
