ST. JOSEPH – The final home game of the 50
th season of Griffon Football comes this Saturday and with that comes a look at the last 10 years for the program.
Â
Each home week this season, we've looked back at a decade in Griffon Football history with in-depth information on that 10-year period's All-Decade team as selected by Griffon Football Alumni.
Â
HONORING THE 2010s
The 2010s have brought the program its highest point and one of the more challenging times in recent memory. With one season remaining, the decade has seen the second most wins (65) of any in the program's 50 seasons.
Â
No three-year period in Griffon Football history produced more victories than the first three seasons of the '10s. Three straight NCAA Division II Playoff seasons kicked off the decade with eight wins in 2010, nine in 2011 and the program's first outright MIAA Championship in a 12-win 2012 season, still the best in program history. After narrowly missing the playoffs numerous times in the previous decade, the Griffons broke through to get there in 2010 and 2011 before heartbreaking losses to Northwest Missouri in the first round each year. In 2012, it was Missouri Western's turn as the Griffons fought back from an early deficit to come back and defeat the Bearcats in the closing minutes to claim the conference title and avoid a third-straight rivalry postseason match-up. Missouri Western broke through for its first two playoff victories, defeating Minnesota Duluth in a triple-overtime thriller at Spratt Stadium a week before running away from Henderson State on the road. The unforgettable season ended a week later with a close loss at Minnesota State in the NCAA DII quarterfinals.
Â
Beyond the great team accomplishments, the decade will be remembered for producing some of the program's greatest athletes. The top-two rushers in Griffon history came back-to-back in Michael Hill and Raphael Spencer. Hill finished as the runner-up in the Harlon Hill voting for the nation's top Division II player in 2012. A number of players from the decade went on to play in the NFL, including two draft picks in Greg Zuerlein and David Bass. Hill, Zuerlein, Bass and Michael Jordan combined for 24 of the decade's 49 All-American honors.
