Women's Basketball Returns to MWSU Fieldhouse with Two Non-Conference Match-ups

Griffons look to improve on Civic Arena experiences

ST. JOSEPH – Griffon Women's Basketball returns to MWSU Fieldhouse for the first time this season as the Griffons (1-1, 0-0 MIAA) will host Southwest Baptist on Friday and College of Saint Mary (1-3) on Sunday.
 
The Griffons are coming off two games at the St. Joseph Civic Arena, including the first win of the 2019 season against Minnesota-Duluth 77-61.
 
PREVIEWING THE GRIFFONS
 
  • Missouri Western ranks sixth in the MIAA in offensive scoring with an average of 68 points per game.
  • The Griffons also rank third in the conference in field goal percentage with an average of 47%.
  • Chris Wilson ranks fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game.
  • Wilson also ranks fourth in the MIAA in rebounds, averaging 12 per game.
  • Corbyn Cunningham ranks eighth in the conference in field goal percentage at 56%.
  • Kylee Williams ranks top-five in the league in average assists per game with a rate of four.
  • Katrina Roenfeldt ranks top-10 in the MIAA in steals per game as she averages three per game.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
 
  • The Bearcats will open their 2019 season against the Griffons on Sunday. Last season, Southwest Baptist finished the 2018 at 10-18, falling short of the MIAA Tournament.
  • The last time Missouri Western played Southwest Baptist in St. Joseph, the Griffons topped the now-GLVC opponent 78-64.
  • The Bearcats' top offensive returner is Bailey Rezabek. Rezabek started 20 games for SBU, averaging 10.4 points per game and totaled 59 assists.
  • Their top returner in rebounds is Sydney Bandy. Bandy totaled 84 boards and averaged 3.8 per game.
 
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF SAINT MARY
 
  • The Flames have a season average field goal percentage of 40% prior to their match-up with the Griffons.
  • Trista Merrival and Alyssa Laudato are the two top returners for Saint Mary. Merrival averaged 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while Laudato averaged 9.2 points per game.
  • In their sole win against Cottey College, the Flames attempted 41 three pointers, connecting on 23 of those shots.
  • The Flames also have a lot of new faces for the 2019 season, only bringing back four returners who played consistent minutes for Saint Mary in 2018.
