MARYVILLE, Mo. – Griffon Soccer's (4-10-3, 1-7-2) streak of wins over its rival Northwest Missouri (5-9-3, 3-5-2) came to an end Friday afternoon in Maryville. Northwest Missouri State ended an 8-game win streak for MWSU in the series with an answer for each Griffon goal, handing MWSU a 4-3 loss.
The Griffons jumped ahead 1-0 on a
Madison Utley goal in the 27
th minute. Northwest got its equalizer in the 29
th and took a 2-1 lead in the 37
th.
Mackenzie O'Neill tied the game about a minute later, sending the teams to halftime tied at two.
Izzy Romano put Northwest ahead again early in the second half with a goal in the 51
st minute.
Kaili Campbell evened it for the Griffs less than a minute later off assists by
Claire Meyers and O'Neill. Northwest's game winner came in the 79
th minute by Kaylie Rock.
The Bearcats were credited with 22 total shots with 14 on goal to the Griffons 10 total shots and six on goal. The win was Northwest's first in the series since a 1-0 victory in St. Joseph in 2014.
Missouri Western ends the 2019 season at home, Sunday at 1 p.m., against No. 4 Central Missouri.
