Griffon Soccer to Host Two More Home Games

Emporia State and Washburn to visit Spratt Stadium this weekend.

Sunday, Sept. 30, 12:00 p.m. vs Washburn (4-4)
 
ST. JOSEPH – After a 1-1 weekend in the team's first home games of the season, Missouri Western Soccer (5-3) will welcome Emporia State (6-1-1) and Washburn (4-4) to town this weekend. The Griffons upset No.1-ranked Central Missouri on Friday in their home opener, ending the Jennies' 32-game win streak. The Griffons then lost to Lindenwood 1-0 in the Sunday game.
 
FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
  • All three teams come into this weekend with just one game of MIAA league play. Missouri Western and Washburn will be looking for their first MIAA wins of the season.
  • The Griffons will look to create more offensive opportunities after they only managed one goal over the weekend. The Griffons totaled seven goals in the previous weekend's games.
  • Missouri Western goalkeeper Anna Mayer has played well as of late, as she kept Central Missouri scoreless for the first time since 2015.
  • Coach Chad Edwards may continue to look to mix in different lineups. He played 22 players throughout the team's close loss on Sunday.
  • Washburn will be looking for its first win against the Griffons since 2015.
 
MISSOURI WESTERN LAST WEEK
  • The Griffons defeated defending NCAA National Champion and top-ranked Central Missouri 1-0 in the home opener on Friday.
  • Missouri Western was unable to score a goal on Sunday and lost to Lindenwood 1-0.
 
EMPORIA STATE LAST WEEK
  • The Hornets shut out Nebraska Kearney 1-0 on Friday.
  • On Sunday, the Hornets scored three goals to defeat Fort Hays 3-2
 
WASHBURN LAST WEEK
  • In their game against Fort Hays, Washburn scored the first three goals of the game and won 3-1.
  • On Sunday, they hosted Nebraska Kearney and lost 2-1.
 
MISSOURI WESTERN NOTES
  • After Sara Collins' game-winning goal against Central Missouri, eight different players have now scored a goal for the Griffons.
  • Anna Mayer earned her first career shutout against the Jennies on Friday.
  • The Griffons have played excellent team defense as of late and have not given up multiple goals in a game since the season opener on August 31.
 
EMPORIA STATE NOTES
  • Emporia State is fourth in the MIAA in scoring average at 2.125 goals per game.
  • The Hornets have only allowed eight goals all season, which is third-best in the MIAA.
  • Four players on the team have scored at least two goals this season.
 
WASHBURN NOTES
  • Fifteen of Washburn's 24 goals have been scored after halftime.
  • Tera Lynche is the team leader in goals (2) and assists (4).
  • The Ichabods have started three different goalkeepers this season.
