ST. JOSEPH - After a season opening series win at Harding last weekend, Griffon baseball heads back to Arkansas for a four-game series at Arkansas Tech.
As she often does this time of year, Mother Nature figured into the scheduling of the series. Originally scheduled to run Feb. 9-11, the games were first pushed to Friday, Saturday twin bills before finally being settled into doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday. Both teams have just one loss and are already building regional resumes. Arkansas Tech went 3-1 on its opening weekend at the AirHog Division II Classic in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Wonder Boys lost the opener before rattling off three-straight wins over MIAA opponents. Arkansas Tech picked up wins over Emporia State and Central Oklahoma which were first and third, respectively, in the preseason MIAA Coaches Poll. Missouri Western was picked fifth in that same poll while Arkansas Tech was picked third in the GAC Preseason Baseball Poll
NOTABLES
- Missouri Western outscored Harding by two runs (18-16) last weekend through three lopsided games
- Levi Schreiner led the offensive charge for the Griffons going 4-for-4 at the plate with four walks, three runs and three RBIs
- Will Jibas went 4-for-8 at the dish with three RBIs and two doubles
- Preston Bailey picked up a save in his first game action since 2016. Bailey missed the 2017 season with an injury after being named honorable mention All-MIAA as the Griffons' closer in 2016
- Trever Carroll did not allow an earned run in 5 2/3 innings of relief and got the win in game three
- Nate Hunter went 6 1/3 in the opener before being chased from the game. He struck out seven without a walk, but gave up five runs on eight hits, three of them earned
- The Griffons stole four bases in four attempts on the opening weekend
- Held without a home run last weekend, Missouri Western produced six doubles and a one triple
UP NEXT
Far from a guarantee given the recent weather in St. Joseph, but the Griffons are scheduled for their home opening series Feb. 16-18 versus St. Cloud State. The home opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18.
