Griffons Look to Gain Momentum for MIAA Tournament

Soccer hosts Senior Night before wrapping up regular season at Central Missouri.

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Soccer (11-5, 6-3 MIAA) will finish the 2018 regular season this weekend with games against Northwest Missouri and Central Missouri. The Griffons have already clinched a berth in the MIAA Tournament and will be looking to add a pair of wins going into postseason play.
 


5 THINGS TO WATCH
  • Missouri Western will be playing for a chance to host its first-round game of the MIAA Tournament. The top four teams in the conference standings host their opening round game. The Griffons are currently in a three-way tie for third with Emporia State and Fort Hays and could finish as high as second.
  • The Griffons have responded well from losses the last two seasons and have not lost back-to-back regular season games since October 2016.
  • Even with Missouri Western's .688 win percentage, its opponents have totaled 243 shots compared to the Griffons' 207.
  • The Griffon defense has played well in recent games. The Griffons allowed only two goals during the team's four-game win streak entering Sunday's game against undefeated No. 10 Central Oklahoma.
  • Cassidy Menke has 11 goals through 16 games and could eclipse her career-best mark of 15 goals last season.
 
MISSOURI WESTERN LAST WEEK
  • The Griffons shut out Northeastern State on Friday by a score of 2-0 to clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament.
  • The Griffons lost to undefeated Central Oklahoma 4-0 on Sunday.
 
NORTHWEST MISSOURI LAST WEEK
  • The Bearcats fell to Central Oklahoma 3-0 on Friday.
  • Northwest Missouri lost in a close game on Sunday to Northeastern State by a score of 2-1.
 
CENTRAL MISSOURI LAST WEEK
  • The Jennies scored four goals in their victory against Washburn on Friday.
  • On Sunday, Emporia State defeated the Jennies 3-1.
 
MISSOURI WESTERN NOTES
  • The Griffons are allowing an average of just 1.37 goals per game.
  • Anna Mayer's 74 saves are the most of any goalkeeper in the MIAA.
