ST. JOSEPH – The final week of the regular season presents Griffon soccer with a rivalry road match and a potentially unforgettable Senior Day Sunday.
Â
Missouri Western travels to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri, Friday afternoon before hosting No. 1-ranked Central Missouri in the regular season finale, Sunday in St. Joseph. A win on Friday afternoon would present the Griffons with an opportunity to put an exclamation point on what will be the program's best-ever season regardless of this weekend's outcome.
Â
The Griffons enter this weekend alone in second place in the
MIAA, one game behind undefeated Central Missouri. Two wins this weekend and the team would clinch a share of its first-ever MIAA regular season championship. Missouri Western has already clinched a home game in the first round of the MIAA Championships. That game will come Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. The semifinals and finals of the conference tournament will be hosted by the highest remaining seed following the first round.
Â
THIRD IN THE REGION
While Missouri Western was left out of the
United Soccer Coaches national rankings once again this week, the team moved up in the most important poll. Missouri Western was ranked No. 3 in this week's
NCAA Division II Central Region rankings after debuting at No. 6. The regional poll determines the six teams that will play in the regional tournament.
Â
LISTEN LIVE SUNDAY
Sunday's regular season finale will be broadcast live on the Griffon Sports Network. Dave Riggert will call the action on ESPN 1550 in St. Joseph. Riggert's call will also be carried on the live video stream. The radio broadcast can also be streamed live using the link above.
Â
SENIOR DAY
Eight Griffon seniors will be recognized Sunday as the winningest class in Griffon soccer history. Entering the weekend, the Class of 2017 has won 43 games and qualified for postseason play in all four of its seasons. Each year, this class has improved on the previous year's record and has re-written the Griffon soccer record book. Seniors to be recognized Sunday are:
Lexie Martin,
Sarah Lyle,
Bridget Blessie,
Paige Phipps, Ashyn Powers,
Sydney Cluck,
Layne Shepherd and
Sarah Blakley.
PINK WEEK
Sunday's game will be the only chance for Griffon soccer fans to support Griffon Athletics' annual Pink Week. Shirts commemorating this year's Pink Week will be available for a minimum donation of $5 at the game as weel as pink ribbons. All proceeds from Pink Week are donated to the Mosaic Life Care Breast Cancer Center.Â
Â
BLESSIE HONORED AGAIN
Bridget Blessie picked up her second
MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week award earlier this week. The senior scored two goals last weekend in wins at Washburn and Emporia State. On the season, Blessie has five goals, four of them game winners for the Griffons.
