ST. JOSEPH, Mo. –  Missouri Western Softball has now extended its winning streak to five games and have a home record of 8-0 this season after picking up two more wins in the Apple Market Classic. Missouri Western earned victories over #16 Winona State 6-4 and University of Sioux Falls 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1Morgan Rathmann opened the game up with a single and
Shelbie Atwell reached base on an error by the pitcher.
Kailey Green helped the Griffons get on the board early, producing a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Winona State was able to scored runs in the second inning on a fielder's choice and in the fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle. The Griffons responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs of their own. Rathmann picked up a sacrifice fly, bringing home
Sydney Washington. Atwell singled to short, allowing
Megan Korgie to score.
The Griffons added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Kailey Green picked up a sacrifice fly to score
Shelby Uhl, giving the Griffons a 6-2 lead, heading into the sixth inning.
The Warriors managed to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a home run and a wild pitch but couldn't get any closer.
Eight different players had one hit for the Griffons. Green led the Griffons with four RBIs in the game while Rathmann and Atwell each picked up an RBI.
Janie Smith is now 11-4 on the season after pitching a complete game.
Game 2The Griffons used a three run sixth inning to get past Sioux Falls and a 30 minute weather delay. Missouri Western had back-to-back-to-back doubles to produce the three-run, making the difference in the game. The rally was started by
Megan Korgie followed by Mueller and Rathmann, giving the Griffons a 6-3 lead going into the seventh inning.
The Sioux Falls Cougars left five runners on base in the last three innings but couldn't manage to even the score despite a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rathmann tallied three hits in the game and recorded two RBIs.
Paige Shifflett and Mueller each had two hits in the game for the Griffons. Five other Griffons were able to add a hit in the game.
Shyanne Saladino now owns a 10-3 record, pitching all seven innings. She allowed nine hits and had four earned runs in her start.
The Griffons will play the final day of the Apple Market Classic on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. against Wayne State and Augustana will follow at 3 p.m.
