BOLIVAR, Mo. – The scoreboard would indicate the Missouri Western softball team wasn't happy about having its seven-game win streak snapped on Saturday. After losing their first game since February, the Griffons set season highs for hits and runs in game two to salvage a doubleheader split at Southwest Baptist.
Â
Game 1: Southwest Baptist 4, MWSU 1Southwest Baptist pitcher Kacey Ayers got the best of Missouri Western, holding the Griffons to one run on four hits, and handed Missouri Western its first loss since Feb. 28.
Â
Ayers didn't allow a hit through the first three innings, but
Paige Shifflett led off the fourth with a double down the right field line for the Griffons. Shifflett finished with two of Missouri Western's four hits. Morgan Ratmann picked up the Griffons' lone RBI in the fifth. With two outs and
Sydney Washington on third, Rathmann singled down the left field line to bring Washington in and pull Missouri Western within one, 2-1.
Janie Smith surrendered two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the Griffons down 4-1. Smith took her fourth loss of the season and first since a 7-4 loss to Sioux Falls on Feb. 28.
Â
Game 2: MWSU 14, Southwest Baptist 6Missouri Western set season highs with 18 hits and 14 runs while
Kailey Green hit two home runs and
Taylor Hamilton added another. Southwest Baptist hit three home runs as well, but SBU pitching couldn't hold the Griffons' bats down in game two.
Â
Four Griffons finished with three hits, including Green's 3-4 performance with four RBIs and three runs scored. Rathmann reached four times with a 3-4 game that included a walk, and RBI and two runs scored.
Shelbie Atwell went 3-5 with two driven in and a pair of runs scored.
Megan Korgie was 3-4 with a run scored. Hamilton hit her second home run of the year and also walked twice and driving in two.
Â
Missouri Western ended the day 17-7 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA. The team catches a break from conference play next weekend, hosting the 16-team Apple Market Classic, March 18-20.Â
