ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The 2014 Griffon Soccer season isn't over yet but this year's team has already left its mark on the Missouri Western record book.
The squad set the tone for the year early.
Teddi Serna's game winning goal in the 101st minute to defeat Harding in the Griffons first match of the season was the latest goal to win a match in program history. Missouri Western promptly tied the program record for longest winning streak (3) while getting off to the best start in school history (3-0). From there, the records began piling up.
One record, in particular, stands out: nine wins.
Sydney Andrews' free kick in overtime to defeat Lindenwood on Oct. 26 vaulted Missouri Western to its most wins in the program's ten year history. It was, ironically, the ninth game-winning goal of the season for the Griffons, also a record. The team's 9-8-1 regular season overall record is the only winning season in school history and helped the Griffons to their
first ever MIAA Tournament birth. In between Serna and Andrews' sudden death winners was a record, five-game winning streak. Between Oct. 2 and 17, Missouri Western pulled off five straight 1-0 victories, including an impressive 1-0 win at Southwest Baptist, who enters this week's MIAA Tournament as the 2-seed. The third of those five straight wins was the 18th for
Chad Edwards at Missouri Western, the most ever by a Griffon Soccer head coach.
