ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Griffons are currently 3-4-1 on the season. After a tough second week of MIAA competition, Griffon Soccer travels to Missouri Southern State University to play Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and Southwest Baptist University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Scouting the Griffons- Last week the Griffons hosted Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State University. Central Oklahoma beat MWSU with a score of 1-0. The Bronchos were able to put a late goal in the back of the net in the 89
th minute off a corner kick that was deflected in past
Sarah Lyle. On Sunday, Northeastern State held the Griffons in check. They did however create opportunities throughout the game but couldn't capitalize against the RiverHawk goalkeeper. NSU scored the only goal of the game on a free kick in the 74
th minute to get past the Griffons 1-0.
Offensively, Missouri Western sits second in the conference in total shots with 98 giving them an average of 16.33 per game.
Tara Russell and
Teddi Serna each sit in the top-10 in the MIAA for average shots per game each getting at least 2.50 attempts.
On defense, the Griffons have only allowed six goals throughout eight games this season.
Sarah Lyle has the highest save percentage of any goalie in the conference posting a .879 and recording 29 saves through eight games. Defenders,
Taylor Gant and
Courtney Kempf have each played an important part in holding opponents offenses in check.
Scouting the Lions- Missouri Southern comes into the week with a record of 3-4-1 overall and 1-3 in MIAA play. Last week, the Lions first beat Nebraska-Kearney with a score of 2-0 but fell to Fort Hays State losing by a score of 1-0.
The Lions have had seven different players score a goal this season. Casey Vitale and Hannah Bomar account for four goals and three goals respectively to help lead the attack. MSSU's goalie is Beth Hammons, she has recorded 53 saves on the year and two shutouts.
Scouting the Bearcats- Southwest Baptist University comes into the match with a record of 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference. The only loss for the Bearcats has come from Augustana College with a 5-2 score. The Griffons lost to Augustana earlier this season 2-0. Last week, SBU claimed two victories one against University of Nebraska Kearney, 4-2, and against non-conference foe Newman University, 4-0.
The Bearcats high powered offense is led by Karla Jamison and Kate Jamison. They have combined to score 12 goals, three assist, and each has 29 shots. Elin Hammar is the leading assist getter with six through the eight games. Cheyenne Forshey is the goalkeeper for SBU and holds a record of 7-1. She has a .743 save percentage with 26 saves and one shutout this year.
