PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Griffons lost their third match of the season Saturday morning at the Pittsburg State Tournament.
Missouri Western lost to Ouachita Baptist in four sets, falling 3-1. The Griffons won the first set 25-21 before dropping three straight sets 25-15, 26-24 and 25-22.
After the two teams swapped sets, the third set proved to be the closest. Neither team took more than a two-point lead until Abby Pickett from the Tigers returned a kill to take a 16-13 lead the eventually settled to 17-13. The Griffons went on an 11-7 run to tie the match at 24 before the Tigers finished the set after a Griffon error followed by a kill.
The final set was close throughout. The Griffons led for 14-13, but couldn't continue their momentum as Ouachita Baptist controled most of the second portion of the set to win 25-22.
Amanda Boender and
Jessie Thorup had 15 kills apiece to lead the Griffons.
Stephanie Hattey had 30 assists and
Erica Rottinghaus had 16 digs to each lead the team.
The Griffons return to action at 5 p.m. against Pittsburg State in a nonconference match to end their four-match weekend.
