Griffon Men Look to Extend Win Streak with Two MIAA Games in Oklahoma

The Griffons are now 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA and have finals week off before returning to action for a pair of game on December 19 & 21 at Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma respectively.

Griffon Notes
• This marks the 44th season of Griffons men's basketball
• This marks the first season in 25 years that the MWSU basketball team will be playing under a new head coach. Brett Weiberg is in his first season at MWSU and 8th season overall. He is 135-90 as a head coach with the previous seven seasons being at Northeastern Oklahoma College. He is just the 4th head coach in MWSU history and had  a 27-4 record last season at Northeastern.
• The Griffons have been balanced in the scoring category with six players scoring eight or more points a game. Two players average double digit numbers with Cortrez Colbert leading the way at 14.9 points per game. Ryan Devers and Cedric Clinkscales have pitched in 14.7 and 9.6 points respectively.
• The Griffons have struggled to rebound the ball getting outrebounded by nearly six a game. They have just 33.4 rebounds to their opponents 39.1. They do have three players averaging four or more rebounds per game with Cedric Clinkscales snaring 6.8 a game.
• The Griffons have 27 less turnovers than it's opponents and 27 more steals. Eight players have at least three steals this season with Fulton leading the charge with 16.
• Since joining the MIAA in 1989-1990 the Griffons are 18-7 in MIAA openers. The Griffons are 8-2 at home and 10-5 on the road.
• Since 1989-90 the Griffons are  19-6 in home MIAA openers. They beat the #15 Fort Hays State Tigers 82-79 in overtime on December 7.
• Since 1989-90 the Griffons are 14-10 in road MIAA openers after defeating Central Oklahoma last season by a score of 78-77 on January 3, 2013.
• The Griffons are 7-2 since 1994-95 on December 19 and 0-1 on December 21. They are 1-0 at home, 1-1 on the road and 5-1 on a neutral floor. The last time the played on December 19 was in 2010 when they beat Washburn 103-82 in St. Joseph. The have only played on game on the 21st which was on a neutral floor against Rollins. The Griffons fell 95-91 in 1995.
• The Griffons were picked to finish 11th in the MIAA preseason coaches poll and 12th in the preseason media poll while the Tigers were picked 1st in both preseason polls. 

Series vs. Each Team:
Coaches vs. Each Program - NSU:

This marks the first meeting for Coach Weiberg and the RiverHawks while haed coach Randy Gipson is 1-3 against the Griffons after they beat MWSU last season 73-61 in the fieldhouse.

The Series vs. the RiverHawks:
The Griffons are 3-1 against the RiverHawks. They have won at home, in Talequah and on a neutral floor. The first meeting was in St. Joseph on November 29, 2003. MWSU won 63-48. The last meeting was on November 27, 2006 in Emporia, Kan. MWSU won 74-73. Last season the RiverHawks won by 12 in St. Joseph evening the series at 1-1 on MWSU home floor.

Coaches vs. Each Program - UCO:
This marks the first meeting for Coach Weiberg and the Bronchos. Bronchos head coach Tim Evans is in his 12th season and has met the Griffons eight times. He is just 2-6 all-time and 1-1 in Edmond. He is 1-3 on a neutral floor and 0-2 in St. Joseph. The Griffons beat the Bronchos last season by one.

Series vs. the Bronchos:
The Griffons have a 8-5 overall record against the Bronchos. The Griffons are 4-1 in St. Joseph, 3-3 on a neutral floor and 1-1 in Edmond. The last time the two teams met was on January 3, 2013 when MWSU won 78-77. Previously the two teams met on November 27, 2010 in Edmond. The 10th ranked Bronchos defeated the Griffons 92-86. The Griffons last victory against the Bronchos was on November 21, 2009 in St. Joseph. The Griffons beat the 17th ranked Bronchos 83-79.

Taking Care of the Ball
In order for the Griffons to be successful this season they have to keep the turnovers down. So far this season they have done just that turning it over just 83 times for an average of 9.2 per game. When the Griffons have turned the ball over less than their opponents they are 6-1 this season. When they turn the ball over the same amount of more they are 0-2.

Dishing the Rock
The Griffons have been very good at getting their teammates involved. Guards Ryan Devers, Cortrez Colbert and Adarius Fulton have dished out 41, 29 and 21 assists respectively. The Griffons have 129 assists on the season and when they dish out 15 assists or more the Griffons are 4-1 this season and when they have less than 15 assists they are 2-2.

Got to Rebound
With being undersized the Griffons have to rebound the ball. They are getting outrebounded by nearly six a game. The Griffons have been outrebounded in all but two of their games this season. When they either outrebounded or keep the rebounding margin under ten they are 6-2 on the season.

Same Starting Lineup
The Griffons have used the same starting lineup in all eight games this season. They have started guards, Cortrez Colbert, Ryan Devers and Adarius Fulton. Underneath they have used Cedric Clinkscales and Dzenan Mrkaljevic.

Balanced Scoring
When the Griffons have four or more players score in double figures they are 5-1 on the season with their only loss coming on the road against Illinois-Springfield. During their three game winning streak they have had five players score in double figures twice and four players once.

Up Next
The Griffons will be off after the UCO game until Saturday, January 4th when they host the Washburn Ichabods in the fieldhouse. Game time will be at 3:30 pm. They follow that up with a Monday evening game on January 6th against Nebraska-Kearney at 7:30 in the fieldhouse.
